Question: I have an aspidistra plant. How often should I water it, thin the plant and change the soil… and should it be warm or cool?
Answer: In the early spring, large plants of aspidistra may be torn apart and planted in new soil. After being repotted the new plants should be placed in a warm, shaded place and should be lightly watered two or three times a week but never heavily watered. By fall each potted piece should make a shapely plant. They are indifferent to temperature and light during the winter.
Question: I have an aspidistra which has flourished for many years, but last winter it started to turn yellow and the leaves are one-by-one dying, even the young ones. What can be wrong, and how can I save it?
Answer: The aspidistra is called the cast-iron plant, and seems to thrive on neglect. However, the manner in which your plant is acting would indicate that it may have been frozen. The plant will withstand cold weather, but a freeze causes it to die. Sometimes it will survive, but usually after a prolonged struggle it dies.
