Question: I want to grow hybrid amaryllis from seed and have a number of seed pods coming. When should they be picked and how do I go about raising seedling? TW, Neb.
Answer: When amaryllis seed pods begin to split the seeds are mature and ready to be sown. They may be sown in a seed pan or flat, barely covered in a mixture of equal parts loam, leafmold and sand. A temperature range of 60 to 70 degrees is suitable. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them off singly into small pots. The strongest ones should flower after two years of good growth.
