Summary: Areas with lots of light may not be window garden per se, but areas with lots of bright light make room for plants which will do well indoors and provide some unique looks.
Some plants growing in a window garden want a sunny window, others want dry conditions and a little neglect. For a well lighted location with very little sun there are three plants that are grown for their foliage. Do not stick them off in a corner that is dark. It need not be a window if there is plenty of light. That is one reason the Philodendron is so popular. It grows abundantly with no sun, in fact it resents sun (some of the varieties): This is a nice house vine and has nice green foliage. It is quite a common house vine but still holds its popularity as it is such an easy subject for the house.
Peperomia Watermelon
Peperomia is the plant that most people know as The Watermelon Begonia. Where it got the name I don’t know unless it is because it wants the same conditions as the begonias. It is very attractive with leaves rounded at the top and tapering to a sharp point, of a nice shade of green and lighter green stripings that give the appearance of the rinds of the striped watermelons. Peperomia maculosa is not so well known and is called “Rubber Heart Plant” by many people. The leaves that are heart shaped are thick, shining green, and have a rubbery texture. This is a beautiful plant and an ideal one for house culture.
Begonias
If you like fiberous rooted begonias that have color there are many showy types with lovely reddish foliage and sets of pink clusters of flowers that are nearly always in bloom. They can grow quite tall and fills out very nicely. If you have been looking for a beautiful winter blooming begonia then don’t neglect Rosea Gigantea. It is a mass of bright red clusters of bloom all winter long up to late spring. The large green leaves set off the brightness of these blooms. For constant bloom the Double Geneva is outstanding. They are lower growing and have very tight double ball flowers in red, pink and white. Because of the fact that they look like miniature rosebuds many people call these the Rosebud Begonias.
