Question: Other than ivy, what quick growing evergreen vine can you suggest to cover an unsightly spot? We’ve considered climbing hydrangea but believe these are not evergreen. WB, Cape May, N. J.
Answer: The only other evergreen vine likely to succeed in your area besides English ivy is Euonymus fortunei and its variety vegetus. Like the ivy these cling by stein rootlets. They’re slow growers and in some cases may be infested with scale. Under certain conditions pyramidal arborvitae or hemlock might fit the requirements. Climbing hydrangea is deciduous and very slow growing, indeed, as well as rather large for small homes. You might consider one of these deciduous vines, too: Clematis paniculata and Virginia creeper.
