June offers excellent opportunities for starting the following plants that will fill the greenhouse with luxuriant blooms next winter.
From Seed
Make final sowing of Anemones before June 5 (start planning for next year) for November to March flowers. Sow Calceolaria and Cineraria at 50 degrees; keep plants cool during summer. Start cyclamen from seed now to flower in 16 to 18 months, or buy 3 or 4-inch plants. Grow in sterilized soil to avoid mite or nematode infestation. Sow the long-stem types of Pansies for cutting in a cool place in sterilized soil.
Stevia sown now flower by December. Transplant seedlings to coarse, loose soil, keep well watered till fall, then keep on dry side. Pinch when 6 inches, make final pinch before September 1. Sow Sweet Peas for winter flowers; shade seedlings to prevent burning.
From Cuttings
There is still time to start late Chrysanthemum varieties. Bench the earlier types already started and feed to get good growth before pinching. Poinsettia cuttings should be started now for large plants in 7 or 8-inch pans. Root in clean sharp sand and peatmoss or vermiculite and shade from summer sun until they become established, then reduce shading. Grow at 60 to 65 degrees.
Set out in the garden Geranium plants that have flowered in greenhouse.
