Question: Last summer the stems of my tomatoes turned brown and pinched just above the soil and the plants gradually died from the bottom up. The same disease attacked flowers in other parts of the yard. Would it be wise to plant tomatoes in the same location again? H Sandusky, OH.
Answer: Apparently your tomatoes were infected with wilt disease. Plant in a new location and if possible get wilt-resistant varieties. Possibly your other plants would get some protection from the disease if they were sprayed with a bordeaux mixture soon after growth started and again once or twice at two-week intervals.
